Routes of Administration

There are several routes of administration for medications, including oral, topical, subcutaneous intravenous, and intramuscular. Oral medications include tablets, capsules, liquids, and powders taken by mouth. Topical medications are applied to the skin or mucous membranes and include ointments, creams, patches, and gels. Subcutaneous medications are injected under the skin, while intravenous medications are injected directly into a vein. Intramuscular medications are injected into a muscle.
