If the patient cannot self-administer insulin shots due to shaking hands from Parkinson’s, the patient is not safe to live alone. Discharge should be delayed until continuous nursing care is obtained, or the patient is able to cohabitate with someone who can provide around-the-clock care. A dressing change every three days may be done by a home care nurse. Frequent visits from family are not necessary for this patient, and will help ensure she is safe at home - not hinder her safety. Use of a walker to ambulate is not a contraindication to living alone, unless there is evidence that the patient is falling frequently.
