An extravasation is the leakage of harmful fluid from a tube or blood vessel into the surrounding tissues. The localized edema and coolness is not a normal finding, even if the IV fluid is continuing to infuse. Phlebitis is the inflammation of a vein due to irritation associated with the IV site. Phlebitis is characterized by inflammation, warmth, and redness proximal to the IV site.
