PEG tube feedings are a direct method for delivering nutrition if oral intake is not possible. In addition to providing nutrition, medications can be delivered through the PEG tube. Liquid form is preferred, but pill form is acceptable if they are crushed finely. They should not be mixed with formula and should be administered one medication at a time. It is important to sit upright during feedings and for 1 hour afterwards. It is not appropriate to immediately resume activity after feedings. The tube site should be cleaned daily, not once a week. It is recommended to flush the PEG tube site with water both before and after feedings to prevent the tube from being clogged by secretions or residual food. Extended release and other non-immediate-release formulations should not be crushed. When in doubt, ask a pharmacist.
