It is easier to continue pain control than it is to gain pain control. In other words, patients should be kept continuously medicated. An infusion pump malfunction may interrupt analgesia, ultimately requiring more pain medication and causing patient suffering. Antibiotics should be administered on schedule, but the timing is less important. Drawing morning labs on time does help the flow of the day for nurses and physicians, but catch-up blood draws are of lower priority. Plus, the nurse may be able to send phlebotomy in some hospitals. Lastly, bath requests are usually the lowest priority and can be delegated to unlicensed personnel.
