Patients generally enjoy broad autonomy and control over their healthcare decisions. One exception to this rule is people with mental health disorders in which they pose an immediate threat to themselves or to others. These individuals can be committed against their will for psychiatric care for up to 48 hours in most jurisdictions. At that time, the period of commitment may be extended after the case is reviewed by administrative judge. The patient cannot be compelled to stay in a healthcare facility even if they are refusing a life-saving treatment, wish to use illegal drugs, or have methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Patients with certain diseases (tuberculosis, smallpox, cholera, and the plague) may be detained or isolated by health officials for a certain time under law.
