An organized, efficiently-coordinated response to disaster and terrorism is significant in reducing damages, saving lives and minimizing disabilities. In covering a rescue operation, nurses and other responders must be familiar with the different components of the operation namely, extrication, stabilization, transport, and triage. Triage refers to the process of selecting and tagging patients to designate priority based on the severity of their condition. It also aims to pinpoint the type of care needed by each casualty in order to ration the medical care and healthcare attention, and to provide resources justly and fairly. Extrication involves removing the victim from danger. Stabilization refers to providing basic care to establish intravenous access and maintain the airway. Transport involves moving the victims to higher levels of care.
