Cardiac arrest in infants is usually caused by respiratory failure; therefore, two rescuer CPR for infants’ switches from a 30:2 compressions to ventilation ratio to 15:2 once the second rescuer arrives. This provides more gas exchange for the patient and increases the likelihood of return of spontaneous circulation. In adults, the ratio of compressions to breaths is 30:2 regardless of the number of rescuers. Although it is true that babies breathe at a faster rate than adults, this is not the most helpful rationale to provide the students. Saying that CPR for adults with 2 rescuers provides longer stretches of compressions is misleading because it insinuates that single rescuer provides 15 compressions; additionally, access to an automatic external defibrillator is the factor that will improve survival chances.
