Warts, also known as verrucae, are benign skin lesions caused by the many different types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Varicella, or chickenpox, is caused by herpes virus varicella-zoster virus. Impetigo is a superficial skin lesion usually caused by Staphylococcus. Erysipelas is an acute superficial infection of the upper dermis involving the face, ears, and lower legs. This infection is most often caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, beta-hemolytic streptococci, and Staphylococcus aureus and results in firm, red spots that coalesce to form bright red lesions with raised borders.
