All adolescents and adults, aged 13 to 64, should be tested for HIV infection at least once. The patient should be encouraged to continue preventative healthcare habits. The patient may be tested for HIV, and “You don’t need to be tested for anything” does not open further dialogue. Infectious diseases can be spread by kissing, including HIV if both partners have open oral wounds or bleeding gums. The patient does not need to wait until engaging in penetrative intercourse to be tested for STDs; any unprotected sexual contact warrants testing. Testing this patient for multiple STDs would not be an appropriate use of resources based on the patient’s shared experience.
