Nonmaleficence is the obligation to do no harm. It includes rules such as do not kill, do not cause pain or suffering, do not incapacitate, and do not cause offense. Respect for autonomy obliges healthcare providers to respect the patient's right to self-determination and to make their own decisions. In keeping with respect for autonomy, nurses must tell the truth, respect privacy, protect confidential information, and obtain informed consent. The principle of justice refers to the equal distribution of benefits, risks, and resources. This principle dictates that each person shall have an equal share according to need, effort, contribution, and merit.
