By law, the patient with limited English proficiency must be provided a professional interpreter. It is inappropriate, unethical, and illegal to assign a family member to interpret. Signals and drawings are not an effective way to communicate with the patient who speaks little English; an interpreter is more appropriate. Referring the patient to another facility with an in-house interpreter is not an appropriate solution.
