Measles can be dangerous for both the fetus and the mother. However, the vaccine is contraindicated because it contains live measles, mumps, and rubella viruses, which may cause harm to the fetus. While the woman was likely vaccinated with MMR as a child, this must not be assumed. Additionally, this dismisses the woman’s fears and harms the therapeutic relationship between nurse and patient. While it would have been better for the patient to be vaccinated prior to getting pregnant, this statement is accusatory and does nothing to assuage the patient’s fears. A measles titer can be performed to determine the patient’s immunity and (hopefully) put the patient’s mind at ease.
