Bell's palsy is characterized by injury to the seventh cranial nerve causing paralysis or weakness in one side of the face. Patients with Bell's palsy may have problems with blinking, which may lead to corneal drying. The nurse must administer eye lubricant or artificial tears to the affected eye as prescribed. It is not appropriate for the nurse to merely document the observation; it should be reported to the physician for intervention. Punctal plugs are indicated for persistent corneal dryness. It is not practical to instruct patient to keep both eyes closed.
