During active range-of-motion (ROM) exercises, the patient performs the movements under her own muscular power and without the assistance of anyone else. Passive range-of-motion occurs in an exercise in which the therapist moves the patient’s arm—the patient does not use muscular power. The nurse may occasionally provide assistance in active ROM, but this is done sparingly. The nurse may teach the patient proper body technique, but generally insists that patients perform the active ROM exercises under their own power.
