Urinalysis is a routine diagnostic test to determine several types of conditions such as kidney conditions, infection, diabetes mellitus, and pregnancy. Typically, a physician will order for a midstream, clean catch urine for evaluation in terms of its physical properties, concentration, and chemistry. It is also useful for the workup of urinary tract infection. The nurse must instruct the patient to obtain the urine specimen in the middle of voiding using a sterile container and after cleaning the vaginal and urethral area. Midstream urine has less risk of being contaminated than the start of the urine stream (or end). There is no need to insert a catheter for urinalysis unless the woman cannot urinate. If so, the nurse or doctor would perform this procedure.
