Acute kidney injury is characterized by an abrupt decline in the kidney's filtration functions. One of the serious clinical features of the condition is hyperkalemia. The nurse may independently manage hyperkalemia by monitoring the patient's dietary intake and removing potassium-rich foods, such as apricots, oranges, and banana. Other methods of treating hyperkalemia include dialysis, and administration of insulin and intravenous dextrose are considered collaborative nursing actions.
