The term for joint pain is arthralgia. It would be inappropriate to document the patient's complaint as arthritis (noninflammatory or inflammatory) or Lyme disease as these are medical diagnoses. There are three broad categories of conditions associated with joint disease, namely, inflammatory arthritis, non-inflammatory arthritis, and arthralgia. Inflammatory arthritis significantly affects other joint structures such as the synovium and synovial cavity, while arthralgia is only described as joint tenderness without abnormalities of the joint. Non-inflammatory arthritis is a type of arthritis that results from cartilage damage or changes in the anatomy of the joints such as developmental, or metabolic or other diseases. Lyme disease is an infectious condition caused by a spirochete, wherein joint pain is present in the advanced stage of the condition.
