The nurse has a responsibility to advocate for patients. If a dose of medication is outside the range of normally prescribed dosages, it is appropriate for the nurse to question and verify the order. It is possible the dose is correct, but it could also be possible that there has been a mistake. The best approach is to contact the physician directly rather than going through a nurse manager. Administering a lower dose per the nurse’s judgment is inappropriate.
