Interventions to be included in the care plan of the patient who underwent a total pelvic exenteration include administration of HRT medications as ordered, connecting the ureterostomy to a collecting bag while the patient is sleeping, and encouraging the patient to assist with the colostomy and ureterostomy bag changes. The colostomy bag should be emptied when the bag is a third full, not a half, as this increases the risk for leakage. Absent bowel sounds are an expected finding in the patient who underwent major abdominal surgery including colon resection. The provider does not need to be notified one day postop about absent bowel sounds.
