The nurse instructs the unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) on the care of the patient on postoperative day one following a radical hysterectomy. The patient is at risk for an ileus following abdominal surgery, so the patient is limited to ice chips until the bowel sounds return. The patient is at high risk for deep vein thrombosis, so sequential compression devices must be on and working while the patient is in bed. The patient will have an indwelling catheter for quite some time; maintaining the collection bag below the bladder prevents infection and trauma from poor drainage. The patient should initially be ambulated with the nurse; the following day, the UAP should be able to ambulate the patient independently. The nurse must be notified if the patient has two or more saturated pads in one hour, not four hours.
