Black cohosh has been suggested to be effective for managing hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. It has also been suggested as effective for the induction of labor and management of PMS symptoms. It is contraindicated in the woman who is 23 weeks pregnant because it might induce premature labor. Induction of labor in a 42-week pregnant individual is therapeutic. Due to the hormonal effects of the herb, breast cancer might increase in severity; it is therefore contraindicated in this patient. It is also contraindicated in lactation.
