The patient who states a preference for herbal remedies over prescription medications must be properly counseled by the prescribing provider to ensure the patient is not at risk for complications. It might be helpful to know which herbal remedies the patient is taking, but this is less important than the provider reviewing the medication regimen with the patient. Telling the patient to be careful and that there can be serious side effects is good information but can be alienating to the patient. Questions that ask, “Why,” can often be eliminated quickly on the NCLEX because they cause the patient to become defensive.
