A complication of shingles is Bell’s palsy, which affects cranial nerve 7 (the facial nerve). This presents with unilateral facial paralysis, which is tested for by asking the patient to make different faces. Saying, “Ahhhh,” tests the glossopharyngeal nerve, which is not affected by shingles. Shingles also does not affect the abducens nerve, which is tested with the six cardinal fields of gaze. The trochlear nerve is tested by having the patient follow the nurse’s finger moving toward the nose; this nerve is not affected by shingles.
