The concentration gradient drives gas exchange between alveoli and capillaries. At high altitudes, the partial pressure of oxygen in the atmosphere is lower, which decreases the concentration gradient from the alveoli into the capillaries. Less oxygen crossing into the blood causes the patient to feel out of breath at high altitudes. Mediated transport (by membrane transport protein) and sodium-potassium pumps are forms of active transport across the cell membrane.
