The American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome recommends healthy newborns be placed on their backs to sleep, due to an association between sleeping prone (on the stomach) and sudden infant death. There has not been evidence of an increase in events such as choking since this recommendation in 1992. The baby should be placed in alternative positions while awake to reduce risk of cranial asymmetry but should always be placed on her back to sleep. Always holding the baby while she is sleeping does not provide time for the mom to get sleep herself and increases the risk of mom falling asleep while holding the baby. Falling asleep while holding a baby places the infant at risk for suffocation or being dropped.
