Intestinal cramping is a common occurrence during colostomy irrigation related to the rate at which fluid is instilled. The proper action is to clamp the tubing and allow the intestinal muscles to relax; once cramping has subsided, the irrigation is restarted. Removing the catheter during an episode of cramping increases trauma to the stoma and may result in insufficient irrigation if the patient stops too soon. The patient would be correct to hang the irrigation bag at eye level, utilize water-soluble lubricant to gently insert the catheter, and fill the bag with 750 mL of warm tap water from the sink.
