Wasting and lipodystrophy are some of the nutrition-related conditions associated with HIV infection. This is due to the reduced absorptive capacity of the intestines of HIV patients. The nurse may provide the patient with small, frequent meals to optimize digestive and absorptive functions of the GI tract, as well as help in reducing patient's experience with nausea and vomiting. Forcing fluids and enteral feedings may not compensate for limited absorption of the intestine. Yogurts with live cultures are not recommended for immunocompromised patients.
