Removal of the tonsils and adenoids leaves the pharynx exposed. There is not much that can be done to protect the surgical wounds other than avoiding foods that would irritate the area. Soft foods should be encouraged, and hard or sharp foods should be strictly avoided. Fluids (other than hot fluids or carbonated fluids) should be encouraged after surgery (not avoided, as in the question). External ice can be soothing and is an option for parents. Unfortunately, throat discomfort is common and to be expected. This should not prompt a call to the surgeon. Instead, the nurse should instruct parents to seek medical advice if there is severe throat pain, evidence of heavy bleeding, or difficulty breathing.
