Complementary foods, i.e., foods that supplement breast milk or formula, can be introduced between four and six months of age. As complementary foods are added, breast milk is decreased proportionally. Single grain infant cereals are a good choice for the first supplemental food. Likewise, puréed solid foods can provide nutrition without posing a choking hazard. Cow’s milk should be avoided before the age of one because of increased solute load on the kidneys and risk for iron deficiency. By 9 to 12 months of age, most infants have the manual dexterity to feed themselves and can begin finger foods.
