RACE is an acronym that is used to help train staff in hospital fire safety. The acronym stands for Rescue, Alarm/Alert, Confine/Contain, Extinguish/Evacuate. Rescue reminds staff to assist those in need first, such as those in immediate danger of the fire. Alarm or alert reminds staff to call the fire department or raise an alarm for help outside of the hospital. Confine or contain reminds staff to close off areas of fire to prevent spread throughout other areas of the hospital. Extinguish or evacuate offers a choice. Staff members who are competent using an extinguisher may stay to put out the fire if it can be done safely. Otherwise, staff members should evacuate the building.
