Basic activities of daily living (ADLs) are the core activities necessary to survive. Basic ADLs include things such as the ability to walk and transfer, personal hygiene, including skin and hair care, showering/bathing, toileting, self-feeding, and dressing. Instrumental ADLs include activities such as money management, shopping for food and necessities, meal preparation, organizing and taking medications and the ability to use a telephone or computer. The ability to maintain gainful employment is neither a basic nor instrumental ADL as long as there is a means of income, such as Social Security or disability payments.
