Prevention and control of infectious disease is broken down into primary, secondary, and tertiary practices. Primary prevention includes measures taken to prevent the disease from occurring. Secondary prevention is to detect and manage an infectious disease that has not yet caused symptoms. Tertiary prevention is to reduce complications after the infection has already been transmitted and is symptomatic. Clarithromycin administration is tertiary prevention. In the case of pertussis, the nurse may administer antibiotics to infected persons to reduce complications from the disease. Testing and quarantining exposed people are secondary prevention actions. Public education is primary prevention.
