Before treatment can begin for the neonate, the mother’s infectious disease status must be determined. Most specifically because the mother’s HIV status is unknown, the baby should not receive any needlesticks (as in starting an IV) until a thorough bath has been performed (or the mother is determined to be HIV negative). A positive rapid plasma reagin (RPR) may indicate syphilis in the neonate, but false positives can occur so further testing is required.
