Children with congenital heart disease should not be prevented from interacting with peers. They should have the ability to set their own pace, in order to self-regulate and prevent overexertion. Recess and free play provide an opportunity for social interaction and self-regulation. Children with complex health needs should always attend scheduled appointments with a caregiver when possible to prevent and treat complications. All children need discipline in order to be safe and productive, including those with chronic conditions. Caring for a child or family member requiring complex care is a significant stressor for the caregiver. Counseling can aid caregivers who are dealing with feelings of anxiety, inadequacy, and grief.
