Bronchiectasis results in the permanent dilation of the bronchi. It is the consequence of many pulmonary conditions such as cystic fibrosis and chronic aspiration. The most common symptom of bronchiectasis in children is chronic, productive cough (though young children may not be able to produce sputum through coughing/expectoration). Hemoptysis is much more common in adults with bronchiectasis than children. Wheezing is also uncommon. Cyanosis indicates poor oxygenation; this is not necessarily due to bronchiectasis. Patients may develop clubbing of nail bed and a barrel chest.
