The child with short-segment Hirschsprung disease has a lack of ganglia in the wall of part or all of the rectum that may or may not extend into the colon. Generally, the surgeon is able to perform a pull-through procedure in which the affected tissue is removed and the healthy is reconnected without forming an ostomy. The child with short-segment Hirschsprung is less likely to require an ostomy than one with long-segment disease. Therefore, the parent’s statements regarding their son having an ostomy require further teaching that the patient will likely not receive an ostomy. Mucus fistulas are created in addition to a colostomy for patients with intestinal resections that are unable to be reconnected and neonates with imperforate anuses rather than Hirschsprung disease.
