Inhalation burns can be deadly as the lung tissue and airways become edematous. Unfortunately, patients with inhalation burns may not show overt signs and symptoms until the edema is advanced. Thus, bronchoscopy would be performed on a patient who suffered inhalation injury to assess for burns to the airway and lung tissue. This is a visual inspection—sample of charred tissue is not likely to be removed. Even if it is, it is not the main reason for the bronchoscopy. Albuterol can be administered with a nebulizer and secretions can be cleared from the upper airways via suction. Bronchoscopy is not used for either of these purposes.
