It cannot be assumed that every patient with a hearing disability will know how to communicate using sign language. While a sign language interpreter may be needed, the nurse should determine how the patient wants to communicate. The patient may prefer writing, lip reading, or American Sign Language. Once established, the nurse should respect these wishes as much as possible. Using hand gestures and speaking loudly is distracting and possibly disruptive to care.
