Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a behavioral condition characterized by repetitive thoughts and acts resulting from distressing obsession and compulsion. It can be managed in an outpatient setting that include medication, behavioral therapy, family interventions, counseling, and education. The patient must be taught to continue pharmacologic and behavioral therapies despite symptom resolution. Therapy can be tapered after a long period without relapse, but likely not discontinued. Importantly, up to 40% of patients diagnosed with OCD as children or adolescents may experience remission.
