One of the major risk factors for the development of decubitus ulcers is malnourishment, which increases the number of bony prominences and pressure points. Further, the malnourished patient has major depressive disorder, which likely results in a sedentary lifestyle. A patient who is wheelchair dependent would not develop decubitus ulcers unless there was another predisposing co-morbidity. The obese patient who is sedentary is also at risk for developing decubitus ulcers, but is at less risk than the malnourished individual. An active diabetic patient does not have any known risk factors for developing decubitus ulcers.
