The full-term neonate born via NSVD who cries immediately and maintains function is to be placed skin-to-skin with mom immediately in order to begin the bonding process. Fetuses exist in a state of hypoxia with an oxygen saturation of 60-70% and do not reach 100% oxygen saturation until nearly 10 minutes of life. Therefore, it is normal that the neonate is cyanotic immediately after delivery. It is not necessary to evaluate the neonate under a radiant warmer, apply a pulse oximeter to the patient’s right wrist while on the mother’s chest, or to warm, dry, and stimulate the neonate prior to allowing the mom to hold the neonate.
