Elderly patients are at an increased risk for financial abuse. An adult patient who is unable to afford basic medical care and is given an allowance by his child may be a victim of financial abuse. It is not unusual for someone who is a chronic methamphetamine user to present frequently to the ER with complaints related to their substance abuse. A single UTI in a young female is not suspicious by itself, and the fact that it is antibiotic-resistant does not indicate abuse. A teenage male football player with a history of frequent football-related injuries is not unusual.
