Placenta accreta is a condition where the placenta grows into the wall of the uterus. Because the placenta is not typically delivered whole, and because of the uterine wall involvement, there is a much higher risk of bleeding during and after delivery. While hysterectomy is the only treatment for severe placenta accreta, it is often possible with less severe cases to save the uterus. Placenta previa is the condition in which the placenta grows over the mouth of the cervix, not placenta accreta. It is possible to safely deliver the baby, but there may be maternal complications during or after delivery.
