Gastrostomy is a type feeding alternative indicated for patient who has dysphagia or a poor gag reflex. This method delivers the needed nutrition to the patient directly to the stomach. A patient with gastrostomy is at high-risk for aspiration pneumonia, which is a common but serious type of complication of enteral feedings. Other diagnoses may be relevant; however, those may not be as significant as risk for aspiration pneumonia.
