Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by frequent, loose bowel movement. Patient with the condition may experience irritation in the perianal area because of the frequency and consistency of bowel movement. The nurse must instruct the patient to cleanse perianal area with mild soap and water, and to thoroughly dry it in order to avoid skin breakdown. Antimicrobial scrub and soap suds enema may increase irritation. Hot sitz bath is recommended for patients who have perianal condition already.
