The nurse should provide education on the least invasive way to prevent urinary retention, which is the Credé maneuver (applying external pressure to the bladder while urinating). If this noninvasive intervention does not improve bladder emptying, intermittent catheterization can be discussed. Indwelling catheterization places the patient at a higher risk for UTI than intermittent catheterization. A suprapubic cystostomy allows for more convenient intermittent catheterization, but this is an invasive procedure and not the first intervention.
