Furosemide (Lasix) is a loop diuretic usually indicated for patients with congestive heart failure and nephritic syndrome to treat their edema. The nurse must discuss the patient’s urinary output in order to determine the effectiveness of the medication, as well as to emphasize the importance of checking the patient for water and electrolyte loss. Level of consciousness is not related to furosemide use. The serum potassium is within normal limits (3.5-5.5 mEq/L). Although it is important to discuss the timing of the next dose, monitoring the effect of the drug is more important.
