Type C esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula consists of a blind proximal esophageal pouch with a fistula between the distal esophagus and the trachea. This patient requires a tube to suction the blind pouch of oral secretions. It is not possible to decompress the stomach with this type of EA/TEF until a gastrostomy tube is inserted. However, this tube is not inserted immediately unless there is a medical emergency. Feedings are not started for quite some time for this patient. Although the patient is at risk for aspiration pneumonia, signs of aspiration pneumonia do not present until several days after the aspiration has occurred, which is not possible on the first day of life.
