Although the radiation was instilled directly into the cervix, because it is unsealed, it is absorbed systemically and can be found in the patient’s excretions, including vomit, for 48 hours. Additionally, the patient is receiving chemotherapy, which will be present in the emesis. Therefore, the nurse places soiled linens and trash in yellow chemotherapy trash bags and leaves them in the room until 48 hours since instillation is reached.  Exiting the room with either radiation- or chemotherapy-contaminated waste is not appropriate. The soiled linens and trash are not removed from the room by the nurse. Standard precautions alone are not sufficient for this patient.
